Hesse, Karen (1997). Out of the Dust. New York, New York: Scholastic.
This is probably the most heart wrenching book that I have ever read. It was so unbelievably sad. It did end in a hopeful way, but wow... I am amazed how Karen Hesse through her very stark and simple poems was able to convey so much about Billie Jo's life and the difficult lives of the people around her in the Depression era Oklahoma dust bowl. This style, I think was more effective than if the story had been told in standard prose. It was a really beautiful example of how no matter how difficult things are that if one has hope than one can overcome. This book would be better suited to middle schoolers rather than elementary kids I think.
