Kira kira is the Japanese word for "glittering". This book is a kira kira masterpiece. It is beautifully written and tells a poignant story of Katie and her family. Despite the money and health problems that the family faces, none of them ever lose their dignity, respect or love for one another. It is a beautiful story of sacrifice and love of family. The family members always look out for one another and share what little they have with each other. Kira kira would also be a useful book to start a discussion about race and class. Katie's family is Japanese American and therefore are not really accepted by the white families in town. Her parents work in the chicken industry like so many other new immigrants to this country, and like others new to the country they hold on tight to the American Dream that if one works hard enough one can get ahead, own a house and send children to college. Despite the sad circumstances this is a book filled with hope and joy.
