Bella, a high school student moves from Arizona where she lives with her mother to Forks, Washington where she is going to be living with her father. The first day of school she encounters the Cullens. They are five extremely attractive students that attend the school. There is Edward, Alice, Emmett, Roselie, and Jasper. For some reason, Edward seems to take an instant dislike to Bella. Bella hears stories that the Cullens are vampires. While separated from her friends in Seattle, Bella encounters some trouble, but Edward comes to her rescue. From there a friendship develops between them. Bella soon realizes that the Cullens are vampires, but they are committed to not feeding on humans. Despite this, Bella finds herself falling in love with Edward. During a huge thunderstorm Bella watches as the Cullens play baseball. During the game, three other vampire appear. These vampires do feed on humans. James, one of these other vampires is a tracker, and so Bella must return to Arizona to escape James. She and two of the Cullens stay hidden while the rest of the Cullens try to find James. James arrives in Arizona and tells Bella that he has her mother, and he lures her back to a dance studio. Edward shows up, but he is too late; Bella has already been bitten by James. Because he does not want Bella to become a vampire, Edward sucks the toxins from Bella. This prevents Bella from the fate of becoming a vampire. Bella returns to Forks where she and Edward resume the facade of being normal teenagers.
This book is told in a first person point of view. We really get inside Bella's head which helps the reader understand how she could fall in love with a vampire. There is a great deal of tension between all of the characters in the book. Some of it is the sexual tension between Bella and Edward, which makes this book so irresistible to young adult girls. (And some older ones too!)
