Look, Lenore (2008). Alvin Ho Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things. New York: Schwartz & Wade Books.
This Bluebonnet Book is about second grader Alvin Ho. We find out about his family and classmates. Alvin's problem is that he is afraid many things and is unable to make friends or talk at school. Alvin tries lots of different things to make friends, but none of them work. The story climaxes with Alvin joining classmate Pinky's "gang". He then is unkind to Flea, the little girl who has been his friend all along. Alvin comes to realize that he does not enjoy playing with Pinky and his friends. He takes back his baseball cards and decides to play with Flea, his true friend.
We get to know a lot about Alvin and his family based on the dialogue (style and language) that the character's share. In addition the book has wonderful believable characters. Their actions remain realistic and true throughout the entire book.
